Hospice for children and young people
Kleine Helden supports terminally ill, critically ill, bereaved and grieving children and young people, their siblings and relatives.
The level of support can vary greatly and is tailored to what each family needs. It might be outpatient care in the lovingly furnished hospice, using play and craft afternoons with other children to help them cope with bereavement. It could involve psychotherapeutic support for those affected and their relatives, or healing walks with the two therapy dogs. The charity also helps with fulfilling final wishes before death, and can offer support and companionship through visits to the family home. From initial diagnosis to death and through the entire grieving process, children and families receive caring professional support from trained and volunteer helpers:
- Respite care
- Mediation and coordination of support services
- Psychosocial support
- Assistance with visits to authorities or doctors
- Bereavement counselling
- Advice on financial or medical issues
- End-of-life counselling for a conscious and dignified farewell
- Support for children and young people with a parent who has a life-limiting illness
- Fulfilment of final wishes to bring joy to the terminally ill.

Project aim
The charity currently delivers an outpatient service as part of the children’s and young people’s hospice; it wishes to extend its activities by providing a partial and a full inpatient facility. The planned extension to the day hospice will provide even higher quality and more targeted care: children and young people will be able to have their own rooms for the duration of their stay and can be cared for day and night. Separate flats for entire families, with barrier-free sanitary facilities and a communal kitchen, will provide even greater relief for those affected.
